Ways to Care for Your Mental Health

Mental health matters. This past January The Friendship Circle of Washington launched a new mental health initiative called UMatter. UMatter is designed to empower young people to take their mental health into their own hands, building a network of support around themselves, developing tools, and breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health issues. UMatter has been a great outlet for our teen volunteers and we can’t wait to continue to grow the program. Since May is mental health awareness month, we compiled a list of ways you can care for your mental health.

#1. Know that you are not alone

Socializing reduces stress levels and we count on friendships for support and a sense of connection and belonging. UMatter can also help you build new and stronger connections with your peers!

#2. Move your body in fun ways

Finding joy in movement, like jumping on a trampoline, climbing a tree, or riding bikes with friends are great ways to not only move your body, but also connect with your inner child and make social connections.

#3. Prioritize rest

In order to function properly, our bodies require proper sleep and rest. When you feel irritable or emotionally imbalanced, chances are high that your body does not get enough sleep.

#4. Develop new hobbies

Taking part in activities that you enjoy increases your emotional well-being when you have an interest in them. Joining UMatter is another way you can explore new activities during our monthly UMatter meet-ups.

#5. Ask for support

One of our missions is to reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues. By making it a regular part of peer to peer conversations, we can build a network of support. Just remember that you can always ask for help.
