Two Sundays per month during the school year, trained specialists and a team of teen volunteers lead children through art, music, movement therapy, Kung Fu, games, and other activities. Through these experiences, children with special needs develop and practice important life skills in a comfortable setting catered to their specific needs.
At the heart of Sunday Circle programming, children with special needs socialize with specially trained teenage volunteer buddies, who engage them with their kindness and friendship. Positive interactions with “typical” teens strengthen the children’s identity and self-esteem by giving them a sense of belonging within the community. These interactions benefit volunteers as well, teaching them leadership and compassion.
Parents benefit by receiving much needed respite. At Sunday Circle, parents entrust their children in the care of qualified professionals, Friendship Circle staff, and their one-on-one teen buddies. While kids enjoy structured group activities, parents enjoy a couple sacred hours of free time.
